We will unleash the potential of Canada’s economy

SCALE.AI will address the four key gaps currently slowing down the adoption of intelligent SC and the commercialization of Canadian AI:

Gap

Technology compatibility: SC applications are often siloed within sectors, or applicable only to a single firm. Non-interoperable technology limits synergies and collaboration.

SCALE.AI’s Approach

Our technology roadmap develops compatible intelligent SC building blocks, enabling inter-sectorial integration and inter-operability throughout Canada and with our trade partners.

Gap

Subscale economy: Canada’s economy is 10x smaller than the US’s, with an abundance of SMEs (90% of private-sector jobs). This restricts large-scale innovation and creates a productivity gap (~45% for small vs. large manufacturing firms). A particular barrier for AI-focused SMEs is access to non-proprietary data/cloud.

SCALE.AI’s Approach

Our governance prioritizes the build-up of synergies achieved through scale and technological consistency. We will drive collaboration involving SMEs, help pool risk and encourage investment. Data and IP sharing is reinforced by specific programs to create data capture accelerators and a secure data exchange.

Gap

Shortage of talent: digital literacy is not widespread, limiting adoption of human-in-the-loop technology. Only ~50% of Canadians have basic digital problem-solving skills. Thousands of highly-skilled data science / AI / digital roles are lacking and in SC, ~70,000 skilled jobs are vacant. Demand for talent will only increase.

SCALE.AI’s Approach

Our talent development plan is massive and addresses the key populations needed to act today, and prepare tomorrow: industry upskilling and reskilling, management engagement, college and university graduates, workforce diversity support…

Gap

Insufficient diffusion of innovation: Canada’s SMEs lack available investment to scale up. Only 1.4% of mid-sized Canadian companies grow over 500 employees.

SCALE.AI’s Approach

Specific projects will support start-up and SME scale-up, in Canada and abroad, notably with our incubator and investment partners as well as by building bridges between small firms and the corporate world.
